RIDE Center Faculty Fellow - Joan Kuhnly, DNP

Joan Kuhnly, Professor of Nursing

Dr. Kuhnly, a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner/APRN and certified lactation consultant, specializes in Maternal Newborn and women’s health. Her research includes perinatal topics, breastfeeding, empathy, and nursing education.

Working with Dr. Jarvinen through the RIDE Center, Dr. Kuhnly has been able to provide her students with opportunities to enhance their critical thinking through the means of redesigning and reassembling equipment they have previously studied. This has allowed her students to develop further skills in the area of research and design, and provides them with transferable skills for their real-world nursing careers.

NURSE305 "Nursing Research" Course Workshop (S'25)

  • Students in NURS305 "Nursing Research" course worked with Dr. Jarvinen in a hands-on, critical thinking exercise.
  • Working in groups of 2-4, students designed their own working nebulizers from a manual bike pump and various rapid prototyping materials. The only medical devices they were given were 1) medical-grade nebulizer tubing, 2) masks, and 3) nebulizer medicine chambers.
  • Students were challenged to then make their working nebulizers work for 2, 3 and even 4 patients at one time.
