CHEM 343: Criminal Forensics - “Building Microfluidic Devices for Forensics Testing”

  • At the RIDE Center, Dr. Jarvinen and Dr. Evanoski-Cole led students in a pilot Criminal Forensics course on how to design, build, and evaluate microfluidic devices to test for explosive material. Using a simple "Ampli" kit, this exercise allowed students of all science backgrounds to understand how a sophisticated color test device works.
  • This device is similar to the testing kits currently used by real forensics scientists.
  • Students then used their devices at a mock crime scene to test if any chemicals they found were explosive.
