Explore the Earth: Minor in Earth System Science for Future Scientists

The Chemical and Physical Sciences Department offers a minor in Earth System Science designed for students majoring in General Science, Biology, Geography, Planning and Sustainability, or Environmental Science. This program provides a comprehensive foundation in key Earth system components—including the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and solid Earth—alongside an exploration of their historical development. The curriculum includes core courses such as Physical Geology, Historical Geology, General Oceanography, and Meteorology, totaling 14 credits. To deepen your understanding, you’ll select two additional upper-level courses, which may have their own prerequisites. We encourage students to consult with faculty members to tailor their academic paths effectively.

Program Description

The Chemical and Physical Sciences Department offers a minor program in Earth System Science that is tailored for students majoring in General Science, Biology, Geography, Planning and Sustainability, or Environmental Science. The minor program provides a grounding in three important aspects of the Earth systems (atmosphere, hydrosphere, and solid Earth), an overview of the history of the systems, and a chance to extend that foundational work with two additional upper-level courses. Those upper-level courses may have pre-requisites other than the foundational courses required here. Students interested in completing the minor are advised to consult with a faculty member in the Department as they plan their program.
